It is generally a type of thistle species harvested as food and is often referred to as Globe Artichoke, French Artichoke or Green Artichoke. The edible part of the Artichokes is the flower bud, and it has to be consumed before the flower blooms. Therefore, this particular species was introduced as a staple diet in ancient Rome. Artichokes can be eaten in raw form or can be eaten in steamed form and are very good for the skin.
