Should Your Shampoo Be with or without Sulfate?
Make Your hair happier by using Sulfate free shampoo. Sulfate is a salt formed by a combination of Sulfuric acid and another base ingredient. Sulfate is obtained by reacting Sulfuric acid with metals, their hydroxides and carbonates, or oxidising a Sulfide; some organic Sulfates are also known, such as Methyl Bisulfate and Alkaloid Sulfates used in medicine.
Sulfate has been used in hair products for many years. However, science and hair experts discovered that Sulfate is not a good friend to your hair.
Sulfate free shampoos are less aggressive than the “normal” shampoo brands containing Sulfate, and make hair look healthier and shinier. While it is true that Sulfate might not be too harmful to the scalp, it does tend to dry out the hair, and in the case of coloured hair, they affect the colour, causing it to lose intensity.
If you want your colour to last longer, then Sulfate free shampoos are probably the best option for you. They are especially recommended for oily hair, as Sulfates tend to create a rebound effect that generates even more oil.
Is Sulfate in Shampoo Dangerous?
Sulfates cause dryness, itchiness, dandruff, hair becomes unmanageable and even your skin can become very oily as it tries to compensate for the loss of its natural oils. You should never use sulfates if you have suffered from allergies or eczema.
Sulfates are one of the most controversial ingredients in shampoos, due to the publication of certain studies that have shown their toxicity. Specifically, one of the studies demonstrated that 24-hour exposure to a solution containing 1-2% of Sulfates can increase transepidermal water loss from the Stratum Corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) and cause mild but reversible inflammation.
